Does Your Hairstyle Give the Right First Impression?

hairstyle first impressionsLet’s face it, many first impressions are based on our looks. Although we shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, the sad reality is that it happens every single day. As a professional, first impressions mean everything. If your hairstyle is saying the wrong thing about you, it could easily cause you to miss key opportunities.

Is My Hair Saying the Wrong Thing?

According to one study, it was found that your hairstyle alone often dictates first impressions—more so than your facial features. Another study involving over 180 participants developed a record of first impressions based on 4 second reactions from the participants upon viewing photos. Here’s what the study found:

Women who had highlighted, shorter hair were viewed as the most confident and outgoing. On the other hand, women with long, straight blond hair were said to be the most attractive, but narrow-minded. Women with medium-length hair with darker tones were viewed as intelligent, caring, and good natured.

Images of men were included in the study as well. Men who had short highlighted hair were viewed as confident, but self-centered. Those with medium-length hair, especially with a side part, were believed to be intelligent. Men with long hair were viewed as good natured, but careless and unpleasant.

How Can I Choose the Right Style?

Although our personality and character should not be determined by first impressions, it is a harsh reality that we are judged by our appearance. The wrong hairstyle could project an image of intelligence and confidence, or it could say you are conceited and insecure.
